Pros: I love this Chromebook! I bought this to replace my personal laptop and tablet. I use it for work and personal admin, browsing the internet, streaming TV, reading magazines/comics and light game play. I’m new to Chrome OS but so far I’m enjoying it. I’m a fan of Google’s Pixels and their previous Nexus’ which host the lovely clean stock Android. For me, Chrome OS mirrors a stock version feel and just sticks to the basics; your profile and getting you on the internet. There’s not much in the way of customisation on Chrome OS but I’m fine with that. Less faff, more getting on.The seamless switch between laptop mode and tablet mode by flipping the screen over, just seals it for me. I can quickly jump from working on my accounts to reading a magazine or check Instagram. The fact in tablet mode it is it’s own stand is perfect for watching an episode in the bath or before going to sleep.I’m pushed to get the full battery cycle out of it but I can be pretty full on when using this Chromebook, so it’s to be expected. But I do get a decent chunk of work done before reaching for the charger and, if not in use, appears to charge pretty quick.I did extensive research before picking this Chromebook and knew exactly what I needed. I chose the i5 again as I like to have the extra power ready for when I need it. I was concerned about downsizing the screen but I don’t feel the impact at all on my spreadsheets. This Chromebook is light enough I can pick up in one hand like one of my paper notebooks. It’s practical and fun…just wish they did it in pink! Cons: The only thing I’d like to change would be the look of this Chromebook. I was replacing my Vaio Windows laptop in metallic pink, so had been a bit spoilt with looks. However, during my research, I felt other Chromebooks at the same spec looked sleek and stylish compared to Lenovo. But with a lower price point and the 360 hinge feature for tablet mode, all in all it was a minor compromise for me.

The screen is back to the 80s! And it flickers… the keyboard have no light therefore if your trying to write in the dark you better have blind type skills. On top of it being the most uncomfortable keypad. The sensitivity of the touch pad “mouse “ is even worst! I absolutely do not recommend getting this piece of garbage! I regret every second of it! Then I tried to return it and VZ will not unswear my phone! This is the worst experience ever! It dosnt even have a hot spot! And it flickering all the time even if you slightly moved. I can’t believe I bought it! And will never ever buy any galaxy products. I bought it 2 week’s ago and it still didn’t even finish downloading the updates, or whatever it is trying to downloading… and to top it off with desert the sound is horrible and the volume is so bad you can’t hear anything without headphones which makes it worst ever, it’s a shame to be offered! I am so upset and so angry!! Don’t buy it!! Don’t!!

Knowing what you are getting into when you look at refurbished units is a must. You’re not getting a brand spanking new model. A lot of them are decommissioned units from schools and the like. That said, I was expecting something with a lot more imperfections than what I received. There are a few places where the paint/finish has been chipped off, probably from being in a backpack. The chips are only on the bottom “lip” of the chromebook when it’s closed. And even then, it’s hardly noticeable unless you’re looking for it. The screen is immaculate, it came equipped with this textured sort of protective layer (kinda like a screen protector for a phone, but for the body of the chromebook and the track pad). My kiddo needed a chromebook, since his school was jerking him around with providing him and several other students with chromebook (the excuse was that they didn’t have 1:1 chromebook to charger ratio, so they can’t even borrow one from the office, let alone be issued one for use…). He’s happy with it, it works like a champ, and it came a few days earlier than anticipated to boot! Much appreciated, folks.

Replaced my no longer supported creepingly slow $3200 17″ Mac Powerbook with an Acer 317. After using a 17″ laptop for 19 years, I do not tolerate smaller devices, and Macs are no longer affordably viable for internet usage through the years. I needed a new laptop years ago, but vowed that a reasonably priced 17″ Chromebook would inevitably appear, and voila! The Acer 317 purchased in early July crapped out just barely within the Walmart return warranty period. So, Walmart exchanged it without hassle and this unit seems to be good. I’ve noticed that other early adopters have had this experience, but do not know how well Acer backs their products once return deadlines pass. Some of these defective 17″ Acers are now appearing as refurbished; they should be good (I hope)! Please back up your stuff on an SD card AND an outboard HD. I love USB c! Ok, Chromebooks are REALLY fast. On the $3200 Mac, I’d have to wait f-o-r-e-v-e-r for pages to load if they loaded at all. All pages on this 317 load like flipping TV channels…..every time! I happily use my old Mac to continue processing data with the $5000 of software I’ve invested in, using the Chromebook for internet transfers of derivative work. Google actively works to improve its applications without demanding hundreds of dollars for latest updates as Apple and Windows do, to only turn around and stop supporting their OSs and stupidly expensive hardware. We economically challenged consumers hopefully have had enough of that! Frankly though, regarding native software, Google aps are 20 years behind Apple software’s utility and performance. Google should be able to match that in another 20. Hence, I need to use all three platforms (yes XP too!) to avoid continually buying new product. Warning! Google is watching you, but you can control that thanks to past legislation. Learn how to control it; Google must by law tell you how, but you gotta ask and Google will only tell what the law requires it to tell you. Hurrah! you can now plug in your old laser printer and use it just like you did years ago. Thanks, Acer! It’s only going to get better, right? Spoiler alert! Google says it’s only going to support the 317 until 2029. Fair warning and it didn’t cost $6000 in today’s money. Regardless, I’ll be dead by then.

A good quality laptop from HP. Setup is essentially a “normal” setup process, going through all of the available features and options that HP and Microsoft offer. You have the option of using a PIN number to log in to the computer, or the available fingerprint reader. Once setup was done, I attempted to download the usual browser preferences, both Chrome and Firefox. Windows does not allow this when it is set up in “S Mode”, which this laptop is in out of the box. You only have the option of downloading and using programs & apps that are on the official Microsoft Store. This mode would be beneficial for someone that does not know much about computers or internet browsing (younger kids, maybe an older parent) in that it ensures you don’t download any potential malware or other detrimental software/apps. It does hamstring users that wish to branch out. However, you have the ability to take the operating system out of “S mode” and solely use normal Windows 10. It does caution you that once it has been done, it cannot be undone. Aside from the setup and “S Mode” feature, the laptop is a good starter laptop for business/school uses, and some light gaming, nothing too intense. The laptop comes with 4GB of memory, which is upgradable (I believe up to 64GB). Although it does not lend itself to a review of the laptop as-is, I did swap out the factory 4GB of memory for two new sticks (8GB each) for a new total of 16GB. For reference, it was Crucial DDR4-3200, part number CT2K8G4SFRA32A.This greatly improved the performance of the laptop, including a much better gaming experience. I wouldn’t attempt to play any graphic-intense games on ultra high quality, but you’re able to play, say, “Roblox Royale High” without much lag. The storage is a 128GB M.2 style solid state drive. Not bad for a starter laptop, but this is also upgradable to a larger capacity at some point if you so choose. As it is an M.2 style SSD, the startup is quite fast. After setup was done, from an “off” state, it took the laptop about 8 seconds to get me to the login screen, and once logged in it was immediately available to be used. Again, not bad at all for an average non-gaming laptop. The keyboard does take some getting used to, but it isn’t too lunky that it makes it undesirable to use. As built-in mouse pads go, this one is pretty standard. As a matter of personal preference I would rather use a wireless mouse as I tend to touch the mouse pad accidentally while clicking or reading and it will scroll, move something, etc. Lastly, the battery life is decent, but is extremely dependent upon what tasks you are doing. If you’re doing simple web browsing, or maybe using Word, Excel, or similar programs, the battery life is fairly decent. If you plan to do any gaming at all, you might want to stay close to a charger as it will quickly eat up battery life.

As my iPad had got to an age where most of the Apps are no longer supported, it was time for some new technology. Apple iPads had priced themselves out of my budget, and I had looked at Lenovo tablets, having previously owned a Lenovo Yoga. Then I thought a little more radical – get a Chromebook, replacing the tablets and replacing the desktop PC, there were no killer software packages that I needed the space hungry PC for.!

The Flex 3 Chromebook is really well made (as was my Yoga ), plus the 3 year JL Guarantee made it a no brainer. The flexibilty that it offers is fantastic, both in its various fold modes, but also in its I/O: two full sized USB and a USB C, and mini heaphone jack socket.
On arrival it booted up quickly, but I have to admit it was a bit of a faff to load the same Apps as were on my phone, and it took a hour or so of concentrated google and you tube for me too become comfortable how to replace my favourite Apps., possibly due to the split personality of the machine chrome book and tablet. However once loaded the chrome book is a pleasure to use, jumping between touch screen and keyboard. At 11.6″ the keyboard is admittedly on the small size, but a lot better that the touch keyboards on a phone or tablet.
The ability to increase storage via Micro SD, and the cost of a 128Gb SD card means there’s a whole lot of entertainment that can be loaded onto this machine.

The other good thing it was a Black Friday deal, and whilst I don’t usually get enticed by such deals, it does seem to have been a real bargain.

My Acer Aspire E15 was beginning to give me problems and I was looking for another. I decided to check Chromebooks as a change. I was impressed with the write-ups and decided on the ASUS C423. It was fortunate Home Essentials Direct was providing a payment plan which made it easier on my SS check and I could get it quickly. I was unfamiliar with but surprised by the size and weight. Not only that, it was damned easy to fire up and getting started. I was impressed with the ease of adapting to Chrome OS after decades of Windows. I don’t even miss Windows now (I thought I would since I had a couple decades of using it). It is a highly intuitive system (MVHO). It also seems to do things I would do but I don’t have to–the machine beats me to it!! I still have a bit of trouble adjusting to the slightly smaller keyboard, but when you have big hands… . I do, though, miss the number pad of my old laptop; got very used to using it. I don’t hand out 5 stars, but I would boost the 4 I gave this up to a 4.75, easily. Highly recommend this and its siblings to anyone seeking to lessen the size and weight of a “”normal”” laptop. I do, however, miss the disk player, this has none. Oh, well. Nothing to keep me from functioning. I highly enjoy this Chromebook laptop.

This is the worst computer I have ever used for my class work, even worse than many school computers. The design is nice but the actual chrome book is very irritating. If you are trying to do school work it wont let you open two word documents at the same time, and if you have video calls for school or to see family it will be slow, and difficult to unmute or mute. When emailing work to my teachers for some reason not all my document show. I use Microsoft teams to video call in my classes and many time my computer does not tell me a video call has started, and it won’t, so I have to join on my phone and restart my computer. The app format on the chrome book is also poorly designed, because the apps are set up like android apps. Apps you need for school aren’t completely functional, it would be easier to use the web address instead of the actual app. I would not buy this product again, I have had many Microsoft Windows computers and they work so much more smoothly, especially for school work.
