Best 10 NAS Hard Drive Review

1.Seagate IronWolf 6TB 5400RPM SATA III 6Gb/s 3.5″ Internal NAS Hard Drive

Featured Comment

Ordered Friday 04/03/22 at 10:04am, arrived by Royal Mail on Saturday 05/02/22 before 12pm – thank you CCL & Royal Mail. Paid a little extra over a global online retailer, being put off them for computer components as I’ve had a retail boxed HDD from them in the past which had some shoddy outer packaging. Also their recent reviews for HDDs showed it’s a bit of a lottery as to how they package their HDDs for shipping. Some customers receiving very poorly packaged drives, dented and broken. My Seagate Iron Wolf 4TB arrived in it’s sealed anti-static bag, inside a thick tubular bubble rap envelope, inside a double thick, snug fitting cardboard box with a grey courier pouch bound tight outer layer. Installed and working perfectly as anticipated. A further 4 weeks later and drive working just fine. I had thought this would be replacing a 4 year old 3TB Western Digital WD30EZRZ (CMR) as my main backup drive in my gaming PC as I was getting errors on that while doing drive image backups. Long story short, the WD drive subsequently proved not to be the culprit (memory/mobo) so I did not really need this new drive. It’s quick and quiet enough while still using CMR (not that problematical shingle / SMR) recording method along with other tech alluding to reliability. It has a reasonable 3 year warranty and additional rescue / data recovery service – wouldn’t expect to use it but it might show Seagate has some faith in their product. Happy so far.

2.(IronWolf Pro with Data Recovery, 6TB) – Seagate 6TB IronWolf Pro 7200RPM SATA …

I’ve used Synology NAS since around 2003 and pretty much found every drive maker has good and bad runs. HGST was the only drive I could say I had trust in. I’ve had three of this model (6GB ST6000NE000-2KR101) and so far they made it over 18 mo just fine. I like the extended SMART data branded under Ironwolf on this drive, but I’m holding off judgment, since every failed drive on my Synology I detected due to performance issues (freezing while copying files etc). I look at the SMART diagnostics and always states the drive was healthy. Um, yeah… Maybe the Ironwolf will do better. Bottom line, I just manage risk by only buying my hot spare when my performance tanks so I am not burning a warranty down just to have a hot spare. (I pay expedite costs if urgent.) Second, I only buy drives that have 5 year warranties (more if I can find them) as three year warranties seem to crap out at 3 years, while 5 year warranty drives usually make it to five years. It’s worth the up-charge since it reduces the risk to the data. It’s a three star drive, while WD, Seagate are all 2 stars. Ironwolf version earns and extra star for at least attempting to provide something better than the useless SMART data.

3.Toshiba 6TB N300 NAS Internal Hard Drive – HDWG460XZSTA

I bought this HDD for my NAS server. Typically I have always used enterprise level drives such as Ultrastar 7k4000 but I saw this Toshiba N300 on sale and well, you get what you pay for. I installed this drive in my server, booted it up, and after resilvering the RAID setup it worked great for about an hour. Now i get SMART fail tests every 30 minutes (see below) : Apr 6 20:36:24 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW! Apr 6 20:36:24 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate. Apr 6 21:06:23 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW! Apr 6 21:06:23 NASSRVR01 smartd[2086]: Device: /dev/ada0, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate. I don’t know how I can get a replacement from Toshiba, but I read somewhere that this specific batch (July 2021) had a faulty motherboard so my guess is they dumped it on 3rd parties like Newegg to unload it for a cheap price. Thanks Toshiba!

4.Water Panther WP Arsenal 10TB SATA 7200RPM 3.5-inch Das Hard Drive (Renewed)

5.Seagate IronWolf 14TB NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD – CMR 3.5 inch SATA 256MB Cache …

Although this is sold as a NAS drive, it can also be used in a computer. You wouldn’t want it as a boot drive. Use an SSD for that. But if you have a home server, home theatre PC or any application with high reads and writes this drive is also ideal as it is designed for 24/7 365 operation. The Iron Wolf drives are more reliable, have a longer warranty and include free data recovery from Seagate. That alone is worth spending the extra money as professional data recovery services can cost thousands. When used in a NAS, the firmware monitors the health of the drive and reports to the NAS software if it is about to fail. You won’t get that warning on a PC. You will have to check the S.M.A.R.T data yourself like any other drive. The drive arrived in retail packaging, well protected and with same day delivery from a delivery service. It was cheaper at Best Buy than Amazon and I know that the warranty will be valid. Warranty is always a concern with Amazon as the drive you purchase may have been intended for sale in another country and the warranty may not be honored. I’ve been burned by that in the past.

7.Samsung MZ-77E250B/AM 870 Evo 250GB 2.5 inch SATA III Internal SSD

I have purchased several of these Samsung 870EVO drives recently for PC client notebook upgrades. The price was a little higher than what I would usually install but the Samsung name and reliability helps to sell the higher price. Installation is easy and Windows 7/10 recognizes the drives without a problem. The Samsung website has updated drivers while the Samsung Magician software monitors the TRIM on these SSD’s to keep them in reasonable shape (If the client wants the software installed). I have not experienced infant mortality for any of the Samsung SSD’s I have purchased and no complaints either which is a plus for me. The drives seem to run cool enough in the notebook PC’s even with High CPU usage and heavy read/write activity. Older PC’s and ones with poor cooling have been an issue in the past, even with SSD’s. My only real concern is the VNAND technology combined with the warranty, stated MTBF, and TWB from Samsung for these VNAND SSD’s. In high read/write applications (large video file transfers and Video Processing), the lifespan of these VNAND SSD’s is sub-optimal. This is especially true when using this drive as a primary OS drive in combination with it being used as a storage drive. The relatively large size of the drive is supposed to mitigate the cells wearing out. I do not necessarily believe that for high write/read cycle applications with very large files but, time will tell. For most applications, these SSD’s will work fine (IMO). I still prefer TLC technology for SSD’s that have high read/write requirements to give better longevity. The slower speed and higher price for large capacity makes them less desireable for most PC applications (gaming?) so I can recommend these Samsung 870EVO SSD’s for them.

9.Lacie STHG2000402 2TB Mobile Drive – Usb-c External Hard Drive, Space

Featured Comment

I brought 2 HDDs on holiday discounts. Overall, I like these drives. These drives cost about 35% more than the typical WD or Seagate external portable drives having the same storage capacity. I don’t notice any differences in performance or technology enhancement between the LaCie as compared to WD or Seagate. In summary, the LaCie mobile drives are: 1) It feels solid. It has an Aluminum body and weights slightly more than a typical plastic body HDDs. It does has an aesthetic look of silvery and slim body, diamond corner cut. 2) The drive spins very silent and not noticeable vibration. 3) Transfer speed – I read other reviews that these drives are slower than others. In my observation, they are about the same speed as other drives using USB 3.0 or USB 3.1. 3) Initiating time – this is the time when you plug the drive into the laptop and be recognized by the operating system – these drives are slower than other drives by about 2 seconds. It is not bothersome for me. 4) The drive lays flat on the bottom with no rubber feet. To prevent it from sliding, I added a silicone case around the drive (see picture). The silicone case also prevents helps to reduce shock or bumps.

NAS Hard Drive Related Questions

Question:What is an NAS hard drive?

Answer: What is network-attached storage (NAS)? Network-attached storage (NAS) is dedicated file storage that enables multiple users and heterogeneous client devices to retrieve data from centralized disk capacity. Users on a local area network (LAN) access the shared storage via a standard Ethernet connection.

Question:Can I use regular hard drive in NAS?

Answer: An NAS works different from your average computer. While you turn off your desktop or close your laptop, the NAS is always running. A ‘regular’ hard drive isn’t suitable for this kind of operating pressure and doesn’t last very long. That is why there are special NAS drives, which are suitable for 24/7 use.Aug 23, 2022

Question:What is the difference between a HDD and a NAS?

Answer: A NAS HDD is designed to run for weeks on end, while a desktop HDD can only read and write data for hours at a time. A NAS HDD is also built specifically for RAID setup. By combining multiple drives into one single logical unit, RAID configurations provide data redundancy, thus protecting data against drive failures.Dec 7, 2018

Question:Are NAS drives good for storage?

Answer: For starters, NAS drives are great for backup. NAS manufacturers like Synology provide user-friendly apps that make automating backup across devices a whole lot easier. Outside of automated backup, you can also manually transfer files to a NAS, including photos, videos and music.Aug 11, 2022
