Best 10 Blu Ray Player Review

1.Sony BDP-BX370 Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi

Featured Comment

Not only is this the first Blu-ray disk player that I have owned, it is actually the first opportunity I have had to view a movie from a Blu-ray disk. Ever. And for anyone out there who is considering the purchase of a Blu-ray player, the difference is astounding.

Prices are dropping on HD 1080P players now that a new breed of 4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray players is out on the market. And that’s great for a well-established player like this one.

The image quality I have experienced is truly amazing (the processing of the Universal logo alone is stunning – and everything that followed exceeded that).

The accompanying literature claims that standard definition DVDs are upscaled to improve their resolution, but my TV does that as well so I can’t really determine how well that works here.

This is a very compact little unit (less than 9″ wide). It plays Blu-ray and standard and burned DVDs (yes, the +’s, the -‘s, and the RW’s), commercial and burned CDs, and can play a huge number of video and music files (from disk or from USB input on the back of the unit). It can also understand JPEG, PNG, GIF, and BMP photo files. Every format that I tested was processed beautifully.

Personal note: Blu-ray DVDs with a menu are, I guess, interactive DVDs and take a long time to initialize. Full access time for me here was close to 20 seconds. I thought this was a crazy long time, but it turns out that this is actually a pretty impressive access time.

This unit is Wi-Fi enabled which means you can access some streaming content like YouTube and Netflix, although I’m not sure who would benefit from this. There is screen mirroring available for Xperia devices (not my smartphone).

I have only two complaints: (1) the remote control is arguably the most unintuitive remote I have ever owned – I am convinced that some of the buttons just do nothing at all, & (2) the user interface is really confusing and poorly designed (at least from the point of view of someone who is really just wanting disk content). Sony should be capable of so much better.

Check your box carefully to see if your model comes with an HDMI cable or not – the BDP-S3700 does not include a cable – the BDP-BX370 includes a cable. There is no good reason that a new Blu-ray player should not include a HDMI cable.

But for size and performance, this is clearly a five-star player.

I wanted a Blu-ray player to finish off my home cinema set up. The reviews on the Sony 5200 made it look pretty promising.
I saw it in store I was taken aback. It is TINY! Others have commented on the “quartz back” styling. It is an individual taste thing, I guess, but I quite like it.
IN operation it is quiet and really smooth. Start up takes only a couple of seconds. The interface that it launches to is the old cross tabbed thing from the PS3. Clumsy but usable. It was quick to find my Wi-Fi network and simple to connect to i, although the on-screen keyboard is a bit of a pain to navigate from the remote – supplying a mini keyboard would be a great help. The same holds true when trying to use the built in web browser (a cut-down version of Opera). Better to mirror with a phone, in these instances.

There quite a few free apps that give access to on demand video services. For some reason (probably sponsored) there’s a huge button on the remote for Netflix, but, as they say, other services are available. Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, Sky News, Demand 5, Sony Entertainment Network and loads more. These all work just fine and there’s no buffering on my home network (unlike from my laptop doing the same job).
Odd, and somewhat sad, is the fact that neither 4oD nor ITV Player have been included. Similarly the inclusion of BBC iPlayer Radio would be nice since the Beeb saw fit to separate audio content out from video content last year.

These gripes aside, the web based aspects of this machine are great. The fact that it is also a pretty neat 3D ready Blu-Ray player with good quality output of video and audio (although, again the digital audio out is the older digital co-ax rather than SPDIF) means that this machine is, to my mind, the best value for the money.

3.Sony Ubp-ux80 Ultra HD Wi-Fi Built-in Blu-ray Player with HDR Compatibility

This player is physically built to a very high standard. However, it is not without issues. For example. The machine routinely freezes and requires rebooting which can be very frustrating. But, When it plays a movie throughout the experience is fantastic. This machine is also superb for its audio output and support, which I often run-through a very decent amp. I very much hope the firmware continues to update to improve upon and reduce or prevent the freezing, assuming that it is in-fact a software bug as opposed to a temperature issue as this does not seem to be an issue when tested. Although I have made extra efforts to prevent any potential overheating as a precaution. I keep the machine well ventilated and elevated with some larger rubber feet underneath the chassis to increase airflow. I believe the freezing is most likely linked to the onboard network controller but it difficult to say for certain as the freezing is intermittent and without an obvious consistent cause. Finally it would be phenomenal if Sony added Spotify and Tidal support as this machine would then do it all in my humble opinion and for the money be tough product to beat. So iron out the kinks please Sony as this machine is well worth the effort for all to enjoy and not just the loaded audiophiles.

Almost perfect for the money!

4.LG Blu-ray Disc Player with Built-in Wi-Fi

This is the worst LG device I have ever purchased. I generally like the brand but I would urge you to purchase another blu-ray player/streaming device. Like other reviews I have read, I have two of these blu-ray players and neither will connect via wi-fi even though they are less than two feet from the televisions. Furthermore, they frequently will not turn off using the remote or power button so we literally have to disconnect the power cord to turn them off. The light flickers but does nothing. I’ve had to do a complete reset on one of them numerous times. I even purchased new one believing it was just a fluke. Nope, got another lemon and returned that one. Finally, it does not support Hulu or most other streaming services (Vudu, Netflix, Pandora, Napster, Prime Video and Youtube. That’s it.). It’s not even a good blu-ray player. It freezes up. They weren’t the most expensive blu-ray players but I still expected more for the price.

5.LG UBK90 1 Disc(s) 3D Blu-ray Disc Player – 2160p – DTS, Dolby (Used-Like New)

I chose this model over the alternatives for several reasons. I have an LG RC897T VHS/DVD Combo Player/Recorder/Dubber that’s still going strong after almost 30 years of use. I used to love Panasonic gear, but the last two BD players I bought from them died after 5-6 years. One started having trouble playing DB discs after a firmware update (that couldn’t be rolled back) and the other just stopped recognizing any discs inserted into it. I have no experience with Sony gear, but most of the models offered seemed packed with features I didn’t need and had no interest in exploring. So, LG it was. NOTE: For me, price was a minor concern, so the LG’s reasonable price didn’t hurt it in my decision making.

Having received and installed the unit into my home theater setup, I can say that it has performed flawlessly so far. The “HDMI Audio Only” connection was recognized perfectly by my Yamaha receiver and hence gives a great audio experience. As do most of the folks who buy region free BD players, I have an extensive collection of non-Region 1 BDs and DVDs collected over the last 20 years. I’ve tested this player with a sampling of newer and older BDs and DVDs and have seen no issues playing any of them. The smooth upscaling of older DVDs has been a nice surprise. The compact remote is laid out logically and presented few of the annoyances of larger “kitchen sink” remotes.

Bottom line, it seems to be another solid piece of LG gear and I am quite satisfied with my purchase.

Recommended.

I know Samsung is supposedly a quality name brand but after this player, I find I must disagree. I do hope it is limited to this as I have a Samsung refrigerator lol.

The features on the box do not come installed, you have to go to the app store and download them.
The remote leaves much to be desired. You have to type click each number one at a time till you get to your letter (like we used to do with cell phones to text until a keyboard was invented). Imagine how long this could take if you have a long password or even your email address. It also does not allow the use of special characters so if your wireless router password has special characters, you will have to change your wireless password.

I bought this last night, I was not able to connect to the internet so I called Samsung… the guy told me the Samsung network was down… That left me a tad confused as I thought I was loading from my network not Samsung’s but he felt really strongly about the information he was providing. I tried it again this morning, of course it still was not working. Call the Samsung help desk again, after a 2 hr reboot, do this, do that their solution was for me to call my wireless network manufacturer and have them take of the filter to better allow the blu-ray to connect.

All in all, both reps did not know what they were doing. So this blu-ray is heading BACK to the store on Monday.

7.Sony Blu Ray DVD Player with 4K-Upscaling, 3D WiFi – Sony BDP-S6700 | Smart …

I have a 65in HD TV (not 4k) and I got this for watching Blu-ray’s and DVD’s, but not really expecting much from the upscaling. Wow, I was shocked at the picture quality with upscaling! It’s a very noticeable difference compared to our old Blu-ray player, the DVD’s seriously looks like HD…my wife even noticed it so it’s not only for tech geeks like me! Lots of different streaming services are automatically available on it, I tried a couple and they work fine but I have plenty of other ways I stream already so I don’t normally use it through the Blu-ray player. The only negative is that it is pretty slow to load Blu-ray’s after I put one in, a couple extra seconds is not a huge deal though. it has a nice small design so it doesn’t take up more space than necessary on my shelf and I like that it only has a small green light on the front (when On) and doesn’t distract from the TV with flashing lights or numbers. I would absolutely recommend this one over the many others I’ve used even if only for the detail of the upscaling so I can still watch my DVD collection and not cringe at the non-HD quality!

I was holding off in completing this review until I was able to test another Region’s disk, and did not want the ability to complete this review before the opportunity expired. Unfortunately, ordering another region’s disc is taking over a month to receive (late August). I will try to leave an update to this review after I have tested another region’s disc. Bombay’s pricing was less than any other retailer that I researched. Ordering and shipping were excellent — ordering was easy and straight forward and shipping was swift and well doubled boxed to protect this unit. Anyone ordering must understand that this unit is a modified unit; meaning the box is opened, the unit is modified to be region free and then resealed and ready for sale. No problem there, the resealed box contains a sticker affixed that states is “region free” status (other than that, there are no original packaging advertisement that this is a region free unit. There is also documentation placed inside the box with detailed instructions on how to use the region free aspects for each region outside of Region 1 (USA). Out of the box picture quality is amazing with the standard blu-ray that I used for testing. Access to apps such as Netflix and picture and audio quality were excellent. I did however run into an issue with using an 2TB external hard drive in both usb connections (one front and one rear) where the video could be seen but the unit would not recognize the audio format, rendering no sound. I could find no resolution online to this issue and it appears that there are others with this issue. There are lesser blu-ray players that work well to large format hard drives and at this price point, this unit should work as well. Welcome to hear of any solutions to this issue as otherwise, the unit is well built, better DAC and video software, including THX certification, than those lesser units mentioned earlier. If and until I can resolve the issue with large capacity hard drive playback, I’ll have to continue redundancy with my lesser blu-ray that can perform the playback. There is also a lack of information in the product manual (Panasonic responsibility) online to research and resolve issues with this unit.

After using this Blu-ray player, I’m extremely impressed! The first thing I love about this Blu-ray player is how easy it was to set up. I was able to quickly connect the player to my TV within minutes and was able to begin watching my favorite movies. Another great feature about this Blu-ray player is the fact that I am able to use the EasyLink remote to control both my Blu-Ray player and my TV. This makes it easier for me to use this device as quickly as possible. Another notable feature about this Blu-ray player is how clear the picture quality is. After I watched my first movie on this player, I was able to see even the finest details on my screen. I’ve been able to bring my favorite movies to life with this Blu-ray player! Another great feature about this Blu-ray player is the fact that it is equipped with Dolby Audio. This has enabled me to make the most of my movies and enjoy them with stunning sound quality. Finally, I really appreciate how compact this Blu-ray player is. The Blu-ray player fits neatly inside of my entertainment center very easily and is also super lightweight. Overall, I’m very pleased with this Blu-ray player and would highly recommend it to anyone in search of a high-quality, compact Blu-ray player!

Junk! Caveat Emptor. I purchased this player less than a year ago. It has poor coding and a weak CPU. Here is what you might expect. Purchase a brand-new DVD coded “All Regions” and you may find the player lacks the coding to read it and thus will not recognize the disk. I called LG customer service and they were simply: “it does not read that disk” is all.

How about you fast-forward a disk it does play = except it will not stop!! The CPU simply locks up and it skips forward……forward…..forward not responding to any function until you finally unplug the power to force it to reset. Clearly you get what you pay for here. I have other non-LG products which have served me well for years. This is the last LG anything I’ll buy.

Things to Know Before Buying a Blu Ray Player

Things to Know Before Buying a Blu Ray Player

In today’s digital world, the demand for high-quality audio and video content has led to the rise of Blu Ray players. A Blu Ray player is a device that plays high-definition video (HD) and audio from Blu Ray discs. With the increasing demand for Blu Ray players, there are several things you need to know before buying a Blu Ray player.

This article provides essential information to consider before making your purchase, including types of Blu Ray players, essential features, compatibility, and connectivity options.

Types of Blu Ray Players

There are three main types of Blu Ray players, including:

1. Standard Blu Ray Players – These are stand-alone players that can play Blu Ray discs only. They typically offer HDMI connectivity and USB connectivity for external devices.

2. 3D Blu Ray Players – These players come with features that let you watch 3D movies on 3D-compatible televisions. To enjoy this feature, you need a 3D TV and 3D glasses.

3. 4K UHD Blu Ray Players – These are Blu Ray players that support 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) video with a resolution of 2160p. 4k UHD technology means that the player produces four times the resolution of standard 1080p HDTV.

Essential Features

There are several essential features that any good Blu Ray player should have, including:

1. Upscaling – This feature is useful when watching DVD movies. It enhances the DVD image quality to a higher resolution to match that of the Blu Ray player.

2. Built-in Wi-Fi – This feature enables the player to connect to the internet and stream content online, like YouTube and Netflix.

3. USB Connectivity – This feature is necessary when you need to play movies from your computer or other external devices.

4. DLNA capability – This feature allows you to stream movies, photos, and music from your PCs or mobile devices to the player.

Compatibility

Before purchasing a Blu Ray player, consider its compatibility with other devices. Ensure that it is compatible with your TV, home theatre system, and other devices. You also need to know if it is compatible with your Blu Ray discs, especially if you have older discs.

Connectivity Options

Ensure that the Blu Ray player you choose has the required ports for connectivity. HDMI is critical as it provides high-quality digital signals for both video and audio. Other ports to consider include USB ports, Ethernet ports, and Wi-Fi capabilities.

Conclusion

Buying a Blu Ray player requires you to consider several factors, including types of players, essential features, compatibility, and connectivity options. By keeping these factors in mind, you can make an informed decision before purchasing your Blu Ray player.

Blu Ray Player Related Questions

Question:Are Blu-ray players being phased out?

Answer: Blu-ray Players Are Going Away That is unless you buy a current or previous-generation Xbox or PlayStation console. Since Blu-ray discs are the standard format for console video games, discs will remain in production for at least as long as these consoles are relevant.

Question:Are Blu Rays still worth buying?

Answer: The value and quality available from the likes of Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ will satisfy most, but Blu-ray remains the ultimate AV collectible, and using it to support the films you love most makes a vital financial contribution in an age where creative work is becoming undervalued.

Question:Is it worth buying Blu-ray over DVD?

Answer: A DVD is a standard definition device. You won’t get high-definition movie viewing on your DVD, just 480 SD. On the other hand, Blu-ray is made for HD, and you’ll get the best picture possible, with 1080 HD capability for your Blu-ray movies. So if you are looking for a quality picture, Blue Ray is the clear winner.

Question:Why are Blu-ray players still so expensive?

Answer: Why are 4K Blu-Ray players still so expensive? There isn’t enough demand to produce them in high enough runs to drive down the price. This is the nature of all production and manufacturing. Order 1000 units and they cost $100 each.
